I was beginning to find the same - must have been all those speed limits we had to keep slowing down for, and accelerating out of..............
Strange though innit, no matter how light the clutch, by the end of a day involving well over 500+ gear changes, some muscles and tendons are bound to complain a bit.

20 mins ago, I'm doing 35mph, wearing all my gear, safe an all, and I'm overtaken by a scooter .... no problem there, Scooter being ridden by someone wearing all the same safety gear, again no problem ... L-plates an all.
ON THE BACK OF THE SCOOTER IS A F***KIN CHILD, NO MORE THAN 10 OR 11 YEARS OLD. SCHOOL UNIFORM, NO JACKET, NO GLOVES, NO SAFETY GEAR AT ALL AND NO F***KIN HELMET !!!
Am I being unreasonable? it made my blood run cold, I just hope that the police sees them before a car doesn't ! |

He recommends I accept it, despite having 3 witnesses saying it's entirely the driver's fault and the police putting the driver on a "driver improvement" course instead of prosecuting, because judges don't like motorcyclists.
He's cited two cases where a motorcyclist was filtering and a driver came out of a side road. One case had a 60/40 result, the other a 80/20 result. |
If the circs on this one were that you are filtering and a car has come out of a junction to your left, then in all honesty, unless the witness evidence is that he just shot out without looking, and that you were only going at walking pace, your solicitor may well be right. I hate these cases, but unfortunately filtering at junctions is very much a risky manouvre in the eyes of the Courts, and the bike generally comes out with the shit end of the decision.
Have you seen the witness statements? What do they actually say? |
Finally got my witness statements, 3 weeks after asking for them. Have PM'd Jay1 with the details but:
One says "m/cycle was approaching junction travelling towards Wokingham at very slow speed, almost walking pace ..... car didn't see m/cycle and pulled straight into path of bike - immediately after admitted hadn't looked properly."
Another says "... but the car driver did not see the bike as she was looking the other way". [It also said that I had stopped to let the car out, which I hadn't but the car just pulled out into me anyway]. _________________ We are all born mad. Some remain so. ~ Samuel Beckett 1906-1989 |

Sitting in the pub and sudenly see a scooter flying down the road on top of a poor kid. Aparently he had gone over a speed bump whilst speeding and waving. Ran over and lifted the ped off him looked down and saw he was still moving which was good. Loadsa people helped and ambulance was called and came. Bloke is going to be ok. Mainly grazes etc. I never wish that upon anyone and its a horrible thing to see. However the thing that got to me was he was wearing jeans, tshirt and trainers. Helmet was half done up as well. And according to his mate he never wears gear. It realy annoys me that people can't get their head around the fact that 30mph is fast enough to hurt. He would still have crashed wearing gear etc but he would be a hell of a lot better now if he had been. _________________

Absolutely. Although I suspect he'll be more selective about his choice of attire now - painful lesson learn't me thinks. 1mm of skin per mph isn't it? _________________

30mph will take skin back to bone in 3 ft, 60mph will wear down human bone at a rate of 1 inch per second.
All depends on the type of tarmac & the interface you make with it really tho.
Even as an instructor, I must admit to the odd short trip wearing jeans,(always boots, gloves, lid & armoured jacket tho) & have recently started giving my eldest daughter a lift to high school occasionally - she doesnt have bike gear but jeans, boots, denim jacket over a normal one, sturdy gloves & good fitting lid - I'm not about to fork out for kids bike gear that'll be redundant in a year if she doesnt like it - reckon she does tho (even tho she moans that she doesnt look good in all of that..(she'd look worse in hospital without it)) I'm not nervous taking my kid on the back but it does make me feel like spiderman - not a superhero but my senses go into overdrive, the 8 min journey feels like 1/2 an hour because I'm picking up on absolutely everything! _________________ Nope. it's not me, I'm in disguise.... |

http://www.babybiker.co.uk/ are pretty good for kids gear, bit of a trek being in Leamington Spa, however they certainly used to have a stock of 2nd hand gear - could be worth a look and in a years time if it's outgrown then they can trade it in...
Although obviously I'm sure you would still take great care whatever she was wearing. _________________

Paraffin.
Why does it have to work so damn well? I started cleaning my bike - just a quick wash and maybe a polish - ended up with a tooth brush, a jar and some paraffin, 3 hours later, I've gone black, the drive looks like an oil slick, the dog is filthy, and only half the bike is done.
Oh well, hope I get chance to finish it off a bit tomorrow lunchtime before dirtying it again tomorrow night. _________________ It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes. - Douglas Adams.

I just hope that the ambulance that attended him was not needed for an old lady having a heart attack at the same time, or for the guy that was mugged or for the kid that got hit buy a car etc etc.
This comes up time and time again and each time I have the same opinion. |

If the NHS could cope, my view might change, but if it is self inflicted, then yes why not. |

As you know I choose not to wear a helmet when cycling. If I were to crash would I be entitled to treatment for any head injury i may sustain through it?
If someone trips on the pavement and breaks their arm should everyone be made to wear armco when they go to the shops?
I'm not being frivolous with a serious subject here, merely raising the dreaded "where do we draw the line" issue. I think we all have our own ideas about where publicly funded institutions like the NHS should target their limited resources, and I certainly wouldn't like to make possibly life or death decisions like that!
Oh, and what about smokers. _________________ So many roads, so little time. |
