no seriously i was thinking that duncan is a fairly well educated fella and may well have researched somewhere like this http://www.engineersedge.com/calculators.htm
to enable him to guage the limits of the beam ......i suspect the bearings in the trolley will fail long before the beam actually gives out and dependant on where the beam is mounted if the supports disintegrate before that.

dont know as havnt seen the whole project which is why i asked Wink

I dangled myself from it to test Razz Laughing

Beam should be good for half a tonne easily with a very good safety margin - I did dig out my old Mechanics Lecture notes and did some calculations on it, but got bored Laughing . The bearings on the trolley are those that would normally be on the front end of a CBR600 or Firestorm, therefore usually taking a static load of approximately half the motorcycles weight between 2 of them (say 100kg) and a dynamic loading of considerably more than that under braking/cornering etc, there are 2 sets there (i.e. 4 bearings) I would happily hang 200kilos from that one trolley, although, I am on the look out for a larger ring nut Shocked

a third party site i know but all the same more info showing concerns for the supporting structure

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=23&t=645474&nmt=Testing%20an%20RSJ%20in%20my%20garage?

it really is dependant on what the intended use is ......if its just competition for tuskys barn ....shouldnt be a problem .....if its looking to lift big weights .....id look at calculations etc .......i know is duncs pride an joy and would hate to hear of anything disastrous.
i like the idea someone came up with of uprights either end in rsj to strengthen the supporting columns.

as i said before i havnt seen the whole project and dunc may well already have carried out all of this.

The beam itself is 6 inch Square I Beam - it is supported either end by 2 uprights of the same section material. The top of the uprights is bolted to the beam, the bottom of them to the floor. The uprights are bolted to the garage walls also ( to prevent "toppling"). I would happily suspend a bike entirely from it.

Karen paying for her dads bike tax today Very Happy (As a surprize)
When she was a teenager she gave us such alot of heartache always fighting, in trouble with the police, never went to school.
She was given so many hours doing a youth referral, she had to go back to school on a Saturday for 6 weeks. She hated it. After the 6 weeks she became a young lady Shocked over night, she pulled her life together. Now we are proud of her, holds down a full time job in the army and loves it. This is the second time Karen has paid for something for us, not asked her too. She phones every day to make sure we are both o.k
Good on you Karen we love you to bits and you are still our little pop.X
